Porcelain Onlays
When a cavity is of small or moderate size, it can be effectively restored with a composite resin (tooth-colored) filling. Larger cavities, however, are best repaired utilizing a stronger, more durable ceramic material that is fabricated in a laboratory. A porcelain or ceramic onlay provides adequate structural strength, while allowing the patient to maintain an all-white smile.
Ceramic onlays have many advantages. They’re strong, durable, and they’re created with special attention to the shape, size, and the patient’s bite. The porcelain used to fabricate the onlay is extremely esthetic and closely resembles natural tooth enamel. Onlays also require less tooth removal than a full crown and the shock-absorbent ceramic acts kindly to the opposing teeth in the bite. A conservative alternative to traditional crowns, onlays prove an excellent solution in many situations.
