TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. The disorder, TMJ Disorder or TMD, refers to a condition that affects the joints and muscles that control chewing. TMD is fairly common in our society, and nearly 10 million people currently suffer from the disorder. If left untreated, TMD can cause chronic headaches and facial pain, as well as unwarranted tooth wear and difficulty chewing. Dr. Mohr has advanced training in TMJ and occlusion (bite) from the prestigious Pankey Institute and Dawson Academy. Cause & Effect
The exact cause of TMJ disorder is debated, but oftentimes, it can be attributed to an injury, illness, or stress. Gender may also play a role in the occurrence of TMJ disorder. Studies show that TMD affects about twice as many women as men. Clenching and grinding, frequent headaches, and changes in the way the teeth fit together are common symptoms of TMJ disorder. Patients may also experience a clicking, popping, or locked jaw, as well as dizziness and unexplained earaches.

Treating TMJ Disorder
TMJ disorder can often be remedied by stabilizing the bite and alleviating jaw tension. This can often be achieved with an oral appliance, which is a thin, flexible nightguard customized to your needs. The nightguard restores equilibrium and prevents the harmful effects of teeth grinding, a common response to TMJ disorder.
