To get dental implants, one of the most important things a patient needs is a strong and thick jawbone that can safely support the new prosthetic tooth roots. However, because jawbone loss is so common after losing one or more teeth, this leaves many patients unable to get implants and enjoy the most lifelike and long-lasting replacement available today.

Fortunately, our implant dentists at Smile Creations are now able to help even more people enjoy this state-of-the-art treatment with overdentures in Massapequa Park. If you’ve been unable to receive dental implants in the past, this procedure could be exactly what you need to enjoy a complete smile again.

What Are Overdentures?

Model of a denture supported by dental implants

Overdentures, just like traditional ones, are small titanium posts that are positioned within the jawbone to restore the roots of missing teeth. They’re also used to support dental restorations that show within the smile. The only difference, as you might have guessed, is that the posts themselves are shorter and thinner than regular ones. This means they can be safely placed within shallower bone, enabling a wider variety of patients to get dental implants. Despite their reduced size, they’re still able to form a firm foundation for a denture that is much stronger and more reliable than a regular removable one.

The Benefits of Overdentures

Overdentures have their own unique array of benefits compared to traditional dental implants, including:

  • Reduced Treatment Time: Because they are smaller, overdentures can typically be placed and restored in much less time compared to traditional ones, meaning patients can replace their missing teeth even faster. Often, the placement and restoration procedures can be completed at the same appointment!
  • Reduced Cost: Cost is always a factor when it comes to dental implants, and mini-implants are notably more affordable than traditional ones. The procedure to get them is less complicated, so they are a bit easier on your wallet without compromising on quality.
  • Strength & Stability: Overdentures, like their regular-sized counterparts, can help patients get a denture they can trust to always stay in place and not slip and slide while they’re eating or speaking. Plus, with routine oral hygiene, these implants can last for decades to come, long outliving traditional dentures and bridges.

Are Overdentures Right for You?

Which kind of dental implant would be best for you-- mini or traditional? This is a decision Dr. Mohr or Dr. Ariel can help you with at an initial consultation. After taking some X-rays of your jaw and examining your mouth, they can recommend which replacement option would be best for you. Whether you choose mini-implants or not, when you’re ready to rebuild your smile, they’ll refer you to one of our “dream team” specialists to place your implants, which they’ll later restore.

Overdenture Implants FAQs

How Is It Possible That Something So Small Is So Strong?

Part of the strength of overdentures lies in osseointegration. In the months following the placement surgery, the bone fuses with the dental implant, anchoring it firmly in place. Even before osseointegration is complete, however, you should be able to eat many types of food with your overdenture-supported teeth. That’s because the implants themselves are very strong; they are made out of a titanium alloy that is significantly stronger than regular, commercially pure titanium.

What Is the Size Difference Between Mini and Traditional Dental Implants?

A traditional dental implant has a diameter of 4 – 5mm. An overdenture is about half that size, with a diameter of approximately 2.5mm (they are about the size of a toothpick). As for the length of the different types of implants, that varies depending on where in the jaw they will be placed. Overdentures can be anywhere from 10mm to 18mm in length.

How Soon After My Overdenture Surgery Can I Eat?

The overdenture procedure is so minimally invasive that you should be able to eat a light meal about an hour or so after your surgery. Until you get used to using your new prosthetic and your body has the opportunity to heal fully, it may be best to stick to eating soft, easy-to-chew foods.

How Successful Are Overdentures?

Like their traditional counterparts, overdentures boast a very high success rate. Failure of the procedure is very rare, and we will do everything possible to ensure an optimal outcome for our overdenture patients.

Have Overdentures Been Approved by the FDA?

Yes, this treatment is FDA-approved. This means that extensive clinical and technical research supports its benefits for promoting dental health on a long-term basis.

Can I Get a Single Overdenture to Replace One Tooth?

The primary purpose of an overdenture is to support dentures rather than single crowns. However, every case is unique. Your dentist will make a treatment recommendation based on your bone structure.
